Horningsea Herald July 2020

Here’s July’s Horningsea Herald.

July sees the reopening of the village pubs this week. The Plough and Fleece this coming Saturday (4th July) and the Crown and Punchbowl on the 9th.

It’s not just a post lockdown reopening for the Plough and Fleece, as Mary, Jamie and the rest of the team have been hard at work. Expect an all new front bar, better toilets, and an even lovelier beer garden to watch the sun go down over the river (drink in hand).

Sadly the Rev. Alun Ford will be leaving the parish later this month. His final service is on the 26th July, either live in person, or via video link. Details are inside the Herald. On the subject of Vicars, John Wilson’s part II of “Around the village” talks about the Rev Smythe when Horningsea was known as the “..most heathen village in England”.

Let’s be careful out there.

Horningsea Herald mid June 2020

Here’s mid June’s Horningsea Herald.

This weekend we have a village event to look forward to. A “Concert for Horningsea” on Midsummer’s Day.

It’s still a remote event. You can find the login details on the village website.

There’s more history of Horningsea within this issue. Some very relevant to current events and also villager’s reports of those events. Plus more lockdown thoughts too. All villagers are invited to contribute their own thoughts, plus photos too!

…and finally we have a Sourdough bread recipe from Bryan, which he’s been promising for ages. Get baking.

Horningsea Herald June 2020

Here’s a ‘sunny’ Herald on a dreary day (Thursday 4th June). There’s even an “event” happening this month (albeit via video):

A CONCERT FOR HORNINGSEA …in celebration of living in our very special village – In celebration of midsummer in Horningsea there will be a concert with all of our resident talented performers taking part. This will be a Zoom concert – the Zoom invitation and details of how to join will be circulated in mid June. SUNDAY 21st June at 18:00

The Plough and Fleece are still doing Fri/Sat takeaway (and yummy they are too!).

There’s some history about one of our our long term residents, Molly Marshall, a long lockdown sea voyage, and a very easy recipe for cookies.

Finally there is a survey canvassing villagers opinion on the possibility of temporary road restrictions at Clayhithe bridge. Made possible from available Government grants to prepare for lockdown easing. One poll is on the Horningsea Residents Facebook page and a parallel poll for people who do not want to use Facebook.

Horningsea Herald mid May 2020

Here’s the mid May Horningsea Herald.

It looks like summer has arrived properly. Here’s to a summer packed full of not socialising…! (this writer is slightly bitter that the day’s activities include sending this newsletter and not attending the start of the beer festival!).

So instead take a walk down to Baits Bite Lock and read about how it was in Horningsea of old. See how the renovation of the Plough and Fleece is coming along. There’s a few thoughts of villagers dealing with lockdown in their own way. ..and since Village Day may be different this year, see what the HRA planned in 1977.

– There’s a list of local food suppliers that will deliver to Horningsea in the Herald. There’s a continuously updated page on the village website too.

– The Plough and Fleece are still doing takeaways on Friday and Saturday..

– Due to the easing of the lockdown Horningsea Parish Charities are winding down their great service of fruit and vegetables in the porch of St Peter’s Church.

– If you are struggling with obtaining groceries, then email Horningsea Assists and some kind soul will do your shopping for you!

– If you know of a self isolating or vulnerable person that does not have access to the Herald then please forward this email to them. Please only print out and pass on if you strictly follow the correct guidelines for shielding.

Help St Peter’s church.
