VE Day weekend

VE Day Weekend Sunday 10th May 14:30.

As the other VE Day events are cancelled, the Church, with Fen Ditton & Teversham are having a Zoom (see below) VE Day Service on Sunday 10th May at 14.30. The Service will include readings from the Horningsea Vicar’s notes from 1943/4 from the church register, excerpts from Molly Marshall’s diaries in 1940 when she was in Finland, Lucas & Lilly Goodbrand from Priory Road will play Dona Nobis Pacem, Emily Kitt will sing We’ll Meet Again, the names of those who died in WWII will be read out and the Last Post will be played on the trumpet.

At 15:00 everyone will be asked to raise a glass of something to toast the anniversary.

You can join the Zoom meeting by emailing parishesthree@gmail.com. You will be “invited” to join the Zoom.

#######################################

Zoom is a video conferencing application. It allows you to participate in a meeting with audio and video.

– If you just want to watch the video then you do not need a camera on your laptop/desktop/tablet/phone.

– If you just want to listen then the phone numbers in the invitation will allow you to do so with just a phone.

Zoom is pretty easy to use. You do not need an account and can do everything directly in a web browser by clicking the above link. There are iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android clients too.

If you open an account then it is free for meetings up to 40 minutes long.

Here’s a guide to joining a Zoom meeting for the first time.

Horningsea Herald May 2020

Here’s May’s Herald.

There’s some rubbish Horningsea history in this issue. If you have any photos of Horningsea past, then please send them in.

Talking of history the VE day celebrations have obviously been cancelled. See the end of this email for a note on what else you can do to celebrate this anniversary.

There’s a recipe for some yummy Tiramisu (it’s all about food!) and an advert for wet short term accommodation.

There was a Horningsea Parish Council meeting on the 29th April. As usual the minutes are available online.

The (now) usual features include:

– There’s a list of local food suppliers that will deliver to Horningsea in the Herald. There’s a continuously updated page on the village website too.

– The Plough and Fleece are still doing takeaways on Friday and Saturday. See their Facebook page for the menu.

– Horningsea Parish Charities are providing a selection of fruit and vegetables in the porch of St Peter’s Church. If you live in the parish of Horningsea please help yourself. Other people are adding to the supply too. There’s been seeds too. Thanks to all.

– If you are struggling with obtaining groceries, then email Horningsea Assists and some kind soul will do your shopping for you!

If you know of a self isolating or vulnerable person that does not have access to the Herald then please forward this email to them. Please only print out and pass on if you strictly follow the correct guidelines for shielding.

Please do keep checking on your neighbours. A phone call works wonders!

Quy Fen consultation on common rights

Quy Fen consultation on common rights – comments by 28 April

Quy Fen is an area of some 70 acres of grassland and scrub owned by the villages of Quy, Fen Ditton and Horningsea. This area was given to the villages probably when the Fens were drained and is looked after by Quy Fen Trustees, two representatives nominated annually by each of the three Parish Councils. Several public footpaths cross the site, which is open to all members of the public.

In the Fen’s early days common rights holders from all three villages would work down there cutting hay and stover, or in winter gathering firewood, but at some time (probably during the war) the whole area was fenced as one and rented out to a grazier, with any profits from rent being divided equally between the three villages. In the 1950’s Natural England decided that it should be listed as an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of the very rare flora and fauna living there. This meant many restrictions on the way it was to be farmed, to the detriment of the amount of rental which could be expected. Natural England promised to pay the difference each year that the rent would have been, plus any extra work needed to maintain the Fen in its existing condition. Over the years Quy Fen Trust has been allocated several thousand pounds each year, and put in several ponds and hedge rows to benefit the environment. Each year the Trustees look at any excess of income over expenditure and may allocate a sum to each village account (ca £250). These funds can be requested to spend on any suitable environmental projects in that village.

In recent years the grant has come from the Rural Payments Agency, in the form of one to five year Stewardship schemes. It came as some surprise when the Trust’s application for a Stewardship Grant was turned down on the basis that it is common land. It seems that since Brexit a new team is organising the system with different rules.

Each of the three Parish Councils now has to advertise the Trust’s application in the villages so that anyone who has any comment to make on the application can do so before each Parish Council approves it on your behalf.

Please contact Horningsea’s Parish Clerk no later than 28 April if you wish to make any comments on the Trust’s application:

Horningsea Herald mid-April 2020

Here’s the first ever mid monthly Herald (well apart from previous ones that were just very late!).

There’s a list of local food suppliers that will deliver to Horningsea in the Herald. There’s a continuously updated page on the village website too. Remember that the Plough and Fleece are still doing takeaways on Friday and Saturday. Their menu is attached.

On the topic of food Horningsea Parish Charities are providing a selection of fruit and vegetables in the porch of St Peter’s Church. If you live in the parish of Horningsea please help yourself. Especially people who are self isolating and cannot order food online, who are struggling because they are self employed or on zero hours contracts or their businesses have had to close or their children are at home and so they cannot work, or you work in the NHS and are exhausted …

If you are struggling with food then email Horningsea Assists and some kind soul will do your shopping for you!

If you have anything that you think will be of interest to your fellow villagers then please send it in. It just needs to have a Horningsea connection. We want recipes from villagers, articles about Horningsea past. What would be great is a regular “What needs doing in my garden this month?”. Anybody up for that?

If you know of a self isolating or vulnerable person that does not have access to the Herald then please forward this email to them. Please only print out and pass on if you strictly follow the correct guidelines for shielding.

Please do keep checking on your neighbours. A phone call works wonders!

Local food deliveries

(this list will be continuously updated. Last updated May 9th, 2020)
It is surely safer to have your shopping delivered than to go to the shops. In an effort to try and avoid going to the shops some villagers have recommended companies that will deliver to our doors to compliment the more obvious supermarket deliveries. Some on this list will take telephone orders, but would obviously prefer online ordering where possible.

Milkman Services:

Both of the below companies were not accepting new customers but I am pleased to report that they are now both processing new Horningsea customers. They do more than milk of course and I encourage you to check out their surprising range.  There was a week delay between me registering and being accepted.

Horningsea Herald April 2020

Much like everything else at the moment this month’s Herald is very different from previous ones. There’s no current events for the month, or those after. So instead we have different content, hopefully to keep you informed and amused. The Herald will now go out on a fortnightly basis to help with communication.

If you have anything that you think will be of interest to your fellow villagers then please send it in. It just needs to have a Horningsea connection.

For example there are currently lots of Teddy Bears and Rainbows in house windows. Anybody up to the task of taking photos of them all?

If you know of a self isolating or vulnerable person that does not have access to the Herald then please forward this email to them. Please do NOT print out and pass on unless you strictly follow the correct guidelines for shielding.

..and finally in a piece of rare good news Horningsea Parish Council’s traffic calming (LHI) grant application was successful!

Horningsea Herald March 2020

Here’s March’s Herald.

Highlights are the Seniors Lunch on the 27th March and a concert of lenten music on the 28th.

The coming days/weeks/months will see the spread of COVID-19/Coronavirus. Let’s minimise the affect on our village by following the NHS’s advice and make sure you look after your neighbours. Especially elderly and vulnerable ones.

Let’s stay safe and healthy.
