You will have seen the posters and banners – and hopefully are prepared for the Viking Invasion on Saturday 12th September and Sunday 13th September.

Schedule of events
Saturday 12 September
- 10:00: Open to the public
- 12:00: Viking & Saxon fashion show (a guided display of the clothes and accessories worn by people of different backgrounds)
- 14:00: Longship “arrives” and battle – Vikings will rampage up to the church, drag the “monks and treasure” back to the field and the battle will commence!
- 15:00: Food of the Fyrd (an introduction to early medieval farming, food and recipes)
- 16:00: Close to the public
Sunday 13 September
- 10AM: Open to the public
- 12PM: Arming the warrior (a guided display of the armour and weaponry of the early medieval period)
- 2PM: Longship “arrives” and battle – as on Saturday – Vikings will rampage up to the church, drag the “monks and treasure” back to the field and the battle will commence!
- About 3pm – the Vikings will row back down the river to Clayhithe
- 4PM: The Field will Close to the public and the Church Service will begin in the Church, including reflections on the Viking spirit.
Tea and cakes will be served in the church or churchyard on both days. Bring a picnic and blanket and sit in the churchyard.
Toilets including accessible toilet are in the church.
Parking is limited so why not come on the 100 bus from Fen Ditton or Waterbeach. Blue badge holders who need a parking space near the field please contact Liz Harrison.
If you would like to see the Longboat from your own craft, please contact Suzanna Watson who is coordinating and monitoring all crafts to keep everyone safe.
There may be an opportunity for children to dress up in Viking style clothes to have their photo taken by their family or friends. There is no “official” photographer so everyone is encouraged to take photos during the weekend. Please send your best photos to Chris Lindley who will post them to horningsea.net to create a record of the day.
The Viking renactment is being done by the Grantanbrycg – Regia Anglorum.
The name Grantanbrycg is the Old English name for Cambridge, and means “bridge over the river Granta”. For almost forty years we have been re-creating Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman culture for audiences in East Anglia, the United Kingdom and abroad.

There is no charge for the event but donations will be requested for the church restoration project. The National Heritage Lottery Fund has supported this event, so thanks to them and to everyone who buys Lottery tickets!
