Horningsea Herald June/July 2022

Here’s a combined June/July newsletter. The May Herald was delayed to fit in all the Jubilee celebrations so it made sense to combine the two subsequent months.

There’s a report on the Horningsea Platinum Jubilee weekend inside. You can also see this, with many more photos, on the village website.

This weekend sees another busy day in our village. On Saturday the 2nd July there’s the Horningsea School reunion and the dedication of the new church window and those splendid 1860 church gates after they have been renovated and altered to fit the new porch.

On Saturday 16th July there’s a very welcome return to the Horningsea social event calendar of the 66th Horningsea Horticultural Show.

Finally the Save Honey Hill group are trying to raise funds for a legal attempt to stop or if that fails to minimise the effects of the attempt to relocate the sewage works to just outside Horningsea.

    Goose Green playground

    John Wilson
If you go into the village playground, you will see a sign saying” Goose Green “nailed to the back fence. It looks old, and yes, it is, for it was put up in the first playground forty years ago by George Wilson, who lived in the village, at the time retaking of the Falklands Islands and marking the landing at “Goose Green” by British forces. He made the sign from an “offcut” of wood from a boat I was building at the time.
The writing has never been touched up nor the wood rotted.
Since then it has been at the back of two other playgrounds and “Goose Green “is now the registered name for the playground, on maps and in the parish records, as a tribute to those events.
If you had been in the village at that time you would have seen a large banner across the road saying “Nott Out”.
This was referring to the Defence Secretary John Nott who had been responsible for the scraping large amounts of the armed forces including many ships which nearly made it impossible for the Falklands to be retaken. So strong was the feeling at the time over cuts to the armed forces.
Now forty years on we would not be able to find sufficient numbers of British registered merchant ships needed to be taken up from trade to support such a venture.
We cannot even find British registered ferries to cross the channel to go on holiday as we have seen recently!

    Platinum Jubilee 2022 – Photos

The Horningsea Residents Association and the church organised an event packed Jubilee weekend.

Starting with the lighting of the beacon on the Village Green, a concert showing the talents of Horningsea, the viewing of the Jubilee concert on Laney Meadow, a picnic and finishing off with a service in the church.

Here are a few photos of the weekend followed by a report of the long weekend.

Thanks to Helen Harding- Male, Debs Wade, Nicola Gibbs, John Wilson, Claudia Goodbrand and Catherine Morris for the photos

After the Silver Jubilee in 1977 the HRA newsletter contained reports about their impressions of the from people in the village of all ages. So this is a report on what Horningsea got up to between Thursday 2nd June and Sunday 4th June 2022. The photographs on the Village Website tell part of the story.
Thursday 2nd June was spent by some of the hearty men chopping wood and hauling it up the ladder to fill the beacon on the Village Green. At 9:00 the village gathered, bottles of Prosecco were opened and the celebrations began. Red, white and blue outfits were worn with sone even managing tiaras! At 9.45 by some ingenious device the light at the base of the beacon raced up the pole and set fire to the wood. The whole village green was bathed in a red glow. Eventually people wandered home to build up their energies for the next busy days.
By Friday 3rd bunting had appeared along the High Street, down St Johns Lane, around the playground. Flags were flying randomly from a number of houses. The marquee was standing at the top of Laney Meadow.
At 9:00 the village children gathered in the church to rehearse for the concert. At 10:00 the bellringers began, joining in the National Bell Ringing cycle. At 11am the exhibition in the church was open. People had provided wonderful items of memorabilia and photographs of themselves meeting Royalty … Michael Harrison’s invitation and Order of Service to the Coronation in Westminster Abbey, Clare Harding’s photograph of herself aged four presenting something to Queen Mary (our Queen’s grandmother) Prince Philip with Andy Clarke and also with Michael Hellowell. Rita Fishpool’s 1960s photos of the Queen at Addenbrookes, Toby Gibbs receiving his Gold DoE at Buckingham Palace. Vee’s brother shaking hands with the Queen …There were medals and invitations to Buckingham Palace Garden Parties. Rather unexpectedly A Royal Signals Corps motorbike appeared, with pictures of the Display Team. The highlight of the memorabilia was John Wilson’s original poster of events in Horningsea for the coronation. I think our predecessors would have been proud that the traditions they began still carried on in 2022.
The concert was great fun, starting off with the Horningsea Young Persons Orchestra playing Juba Dance on a wide variety of instruments, with the assistance of a few musical adults. There were poems and readings from AAMilne, Queen Victoria, Sue Townsend, Alan Bennett, John Betjeman, Rae Langton’s mother in Australia, Kashuo Ishiguro and Richmal Compton. Our new Vicar tried to steal the show by dressing up as Just William! The musical contributions included madrigals from Queen Elizabeth I’s day, a minuet written by a musician’s great grandfather, a trio, Recorder solo, song written for the occasion, a G & S song …finishing with a Ukrainian folk song and the Ukrainian National Anthem on recorders. There was a huge amount of enthusiasm for the talent our village can produce.
Saturday’s events at Laney Meadow began late afternoon with the lighting of the barbecue, the delivery of beer from our two pubs and the arrival of the horsebox selling gin and wine. During the afternoon Carolyn Truss walked her magnificent shire horse, Max, down to the meadow, his mane plaited with red white and blue ribbons and decorated with Union jacks. The large screen in the marquee started showing the events outside Buckingham Palace as people settled down to enjoy the Jubilee Party. There was some “singing along”, some cheering and some critics! Once the Buckingham Palace Party finished the Horningsea Party began, with music and dancing late into the night.
Unfortunately on Sunday the weather turned and we had a damp day but the spirits were still high! A large number of children and adults had accepted the challenge to make a pudding or cake fit for a Queen picnics were shared, bottles opened, a Royal quiz distributed, children braved the weather to take part in games outside. The planned Dancing couldn’t get going because of the weather but nevertheless a good time was had by all. The Vicar judges the cakes and puddings, the winner of the flower arrangements was announced, prizes were distributed and eventually we packed up and went home.
The final event was the Jubilee Church Service on the Sunday evening. A fitting way to round off a splendid weekend of sociability. We had reminded ourselves why Horningsea is such a good place to live! New families, old families, babies, elderly people in wheelchairs, children, adults … everyone took part with enthusiasm.

Horningsea Herald, website and social media: Annual Meeting of the Parish report 2022

It’s the Horningsea Annual meeting of the Parish on Wednesday 25th May.

Various village groups are invited to present a report. Here’s a fully linked version of the report that will be presented on the village newsletter, website, social media and other online places.

    Horningsea Herald

The Horningsea Herald is primarily for publicising village events for the coming month. However, anything that is of direct relevance to villagers is welcome too. It’s also intended for reports, especially with photos, of recent village events.

    Pandemic

There were no real events during the first year of the pandemic. So the editors tried to encourage villagers to submit their stories/thoughts/articles on whatever they wanted, as long as there was a link (no matter how tenuous) to Horningsea. So special thanks to Vee Sanders, Richard Pleasants and John Wilson who all submitted many regular articles. Lindsay also continued to contribute articles. From Vee’s “How I came to know Horningsea”, Richard’s “Lockdown thoughts” and John’s varied articles on the history of Horningsea. We should print and bind those articles for distribution to the village! Their articles kept the newsletter going.

    Publication

The release schedule is approximately just before the first weekend of a month! The deadline for submission is still the 25th, but of course we always try and be as flexible as possible.

    The Herald is published:
    – Via an email list as a PDF
    – On the village website
    – On the village Horningsea Residents Facebook group
    – via @horningseanews Twitter account

If you do not receive the Herald then google “horningsea herald” for instructions (or email horningseanews@gmail.com).

The number of recipients does fluctuate but there are currently 171 subscribers as of today.

The long term goal is still to move the Herald away from a PDF magazine style format, and towards an online format. However, the newsletter style of a PDF is ideal for less IT literate people.

    Submitting items

The only guideline for news is for events and articles that are of direct relevance to the inhabitants of Horningsea. The Herald does not accept advertising, but one off “news items” may be used to publicise local businesses, including events. To submit news items either email “ horningseanews@gmail.com ” or submit them via Twitter . You must submit by the 25th of the month, the Herald being published before the first weekend of the month.

    Online calendar

There’s an online calendar that anybody can subscribe to for village events (Gmail). The link to subscribe is in each issue. Anybody can view the calendar. You can also add it to your own calendar directly.

    Horningsea Residents Facebook group

During the first year of lockdowns there was a greater influx of villagers to to the Facebook group than had joined in the previous 15 or so years since the group was created. Facebook does not keep statistics beyond the last year, but at a guess I would say the group grew by at least 100 residents during those six months to make the current number of 263 members. That has had a beneficial effect on the group as there is a fairly healthy mix of posts on various topics (not just one or two). Although the past 18 months has seen many posts about the sewage works relocation.

As with any small group there is a tendency for “outside” posts to make a poor signal to noise ratio, so the moderators are quite strict in removing irrelevant posts (Debs and Chris). We are quite strict on non Horningsea businesses putting adverts too.
See link above or search Facebook for “horningsea residents” to join.

    Website

There’s nothing much to report on the website. Probably it is about time for a revamp as it’s over ten years since Rob, Frank and I redid it. People still contribute and the Horningsea Herald is still published monthly on there. There are also church times.
