Horningsea Herald December 2020

Hello Horningsea,

It’s the December Horningsea Herald. Since we have no Christmas tree lighting, then I guess this makes it the start of Christmas…!

So Happy Christmas to one and all.

The first of December saw the start of Horningsea’s very own Advent Calendar. Everyday a new house window will be opened for you and your family to find and say “ahhh!”. Clues will be posted daily on the Village Facebook Group. Be the first to post your photos on there!

The Carol service is going ahead. Mostly virtual, although a lucky few will get to see it in the real world. Full details are inside, but keep checking the village website for up to date information. The Zoom details will be posted on the Facebook page before the event.

We have a new irregular article on celestial events above our heads and regular comments from villagers. Please send in photos or articles, They only have to be nice and relevant to Horningsea.

See what’s happening over Xmas in our neighbouring village Festive Fen Ditton Flyer.

Finally our village pubs are opening again! Make sure you get your family down for a pint and a substantial meal to support both! Use them or lose them!

There’s important appeals being run by our two schools – Fen Ditton School Laptop Appeal and Bottisham Village College Hamper and Food Appeal. Please support these.

Look after yourselves and enjoy Christmas.

Kind regards

The Editorial Team

Horningsea Carol Service

Sunday 13 December at 17.30 for 18.00 by Zoom (mostly!)

Even though the rules and regulations keep changing we have been determined that Horningsea Candlelit Carol Service will take place so we look forward to welcoming you all on Sunday 13 December. It won’t be the same as usual because we are not allowed to have more than 30 people in the church and we are not allowed to sing as a congregation, but we have done our best to keep some of the traditional Carol Service in place. We will have some candles, a small choir singing well known Carols, the children singing Away in a Manger as the crib is blessed. Traditional readings will be interspersed with a few poems. Our talented village children will sing and play Christmas music on the violin, cello and ukelele. The bells will ring out as usual. I hope that when we dim the lights and hear the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City as a solo we will all settle down into hearing the retelling of the Christmas story as we do every year.

The Zoom invitation will also be on the Village Facebook page, and a Church Near You.

If you cannot join by Zoom please let one of the Churchwardens know as soon as possible and we will see if we can allocate a seat in church.

And As Tiny Tim said at the end of Christmas Carol “Merry Christmas to you all. God bless you, everyone!”

EDIT December 22, 2020

..and here is the full video of the Carol service on YouTube.

New playground….sliding in soon

by Will Neale

We are pleased to publicise that Horningsea is getting a new playground!

With the existing play equipment being condemned and the playground having to be closed, the combined efforts of the Parish Council, Village Hall Trust and Residents Association swung into action and have been successful in obtaining funding from FFC Community Foundation!

As you read this the new equipment is being manufactured and we are expecting the installation to take place at the beginning of 2021. We shall keep you updated, and assuming Boris allows us, we will try and to have an opening party in early Spring.

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund and we are delighted that they have approved our funding application!

Remembrance Day Service now cancelled

Sadly, the Remembrance Day Service for Sunday 8 November has been cancelled due to Covid19 restrictions

Two people will observe the Two-minute Silence at the Jubilee Garden war memorial at 11am

There is now a list of the Fallen of Horningsea. In previous years this was read out after the two minutes silence in the Jubilee Gardens.

Horningsea Herald November 2020

Here’s November’s Horningsea Herald.

As we go into another lockdown, let’s look after one another in the village.

Horningsea has a mutual aid group with a bunch of volunteers ready to provide help for any Horningsea resident that will be shielding or vulnerable.
Ways to ask for help:
– Post in the Horningsea Residents Facebook group.
– Email horningsea-assist@googlegroups.com
– Call: Graham Haynes on 07723 472858
If you want to volunteer your help in the coming months then email horningsea-assist@googlegroups.com.

Please ensure that your neighbours are well. A phone call can make a difference to somebody alone.

Horningsea Parish Charities are also running their “Vegetables and Fruit in the Church Porch” scheme again from 1st November.

As before if anybody has any stories, writing, drawing, recipes, photos or whatever then please send them to the editorial team. Anything is relevant if it has a link to Horningsea, no matter how tenuous! Especially welcome are tales of Horningsea past. Even if it’s the recent past.

Let’s get through these dark months. Look after yourselves..!

Fruit & veg in the church porch – again!

Horningsea Parish Charities are once again leaving fruit and vegetables in the Church porch.

As people are being made redundant, and self-employed businesses have struggled to keep going, we remind residents of Horningsea that the Parish Charities may be able to help with small grants. This may assist you with a week’s worth of shopping or with feeding the children or payment of an electricity bill.

Please let one of the Trustees know if you or anyone you know might benefit from a grant.
In addition, we have restarted the scheme of putting fruit and vegetables in the church porch for everyone to help themselves.

The HPC Trustees are Michael Gingell, John Wilson and Lindsay Davies (email ldathorningsea @gmail.com)
