Horningsea Herald December 2022

Here’s the Christmas Herald!

It always seems far too early to be saying this, but since the next Herald is never out until the New Year….

Merry Christmas Horningsea!

As usual Horningsea will kick off the Christmas festivities with the HRA Christmas Tree Lighting this coming Sunday (4th) in the Jubilee gardens.

Followed by the traditional Candlelit Carol Service on the 11th. This is a very popular event and many people from outside the village attend. So arrive early (and wrap up well!) to get your seat!

On the 13th of December the Horningsea Warm Hub will open its doors for the first time. It will be in the Village hall and will be open from 10:30 to 12:00.

Two recent additions to the Horningsea festivities are the Very Short Nativity Play and the Advent Windows!

– The Very Short Nativity will be on the 18th of December and is open to all children in the village.

– For Horningsea’s Advent Windows every day from the 1st until Christmas day a new “secret” household will decorate their window. Go tour around the village and see if you can spot them. Once opened every window will remain decorated until Christmas and beyond. You’ll be able to see some photos in the Horningsea Facebook group, but if you take a photo please only post after the date to avoid spoiling the surprise for others!

Horningsea’s Candlelit Carol Service and other services for December

Sunday 11th December at 18:00

The Candlelit Carol Service returns this year after two years of Zoomed Carols. The oil lamps will be lit and the church filled with candles – thanks to Liz Harrison and her team of workers. The bells will ring out. The Christmas Tree has been kindly donated by Scotsdales. The service begins with a young soloist singing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City and continues with the well known readings telling the prophesies and then the events of that first Christmas. Children will be asked to carry lanterns around the church to the crib for a blessing. This year in addition to our favourite Carols sung by the congregation we will have a contribution by HYPO (Horningsea Young Person’s Orchestra) as well as a Carol sung by Frank’s group. There will be a ukulele rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas while we have coffee and mince pies!

The message is that you need to come early to make sure of getting a seat and wrap up warm! Contributions of mince pies are welcome and if you want to help light the candles we will start lighting at about 17.15

  • 4 Dec 10.30 communion
  • 11 Carol service 18.00
  • 18 Dec V short Nativity 12 noon
  • 25 Dec 10.30 Christmas Day service.

On the topic of sewage, after a wonderful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Liz brings her very rude and equally funny show to the Cambridge Junction on the 19th. The show is about Anglian Water’s plans for relocating the Cambridge sewage works to Cambridge Greenbelt slap bang in between Fen Ditton and Horningsea. Buy tickets at the junction.

    Horningsea Herald October 2022

    Here’s October’s Herald.

The best HRA event of the year is approaching. As usual the Horningsea bonfire will be on the Sunday following bonfire night on the 6th of November.

Coming back to October on the Saturday the 8th there’s a concert in the church, with a Harvest Festival on the following Sunday (9th).

There’s a report on the Traffic Workshop that our parish council ran. Let’s hope we see some progress on traffic calming in this village over the next year.

The Plough and Fleece’s petanque team won the cup AND came top of the league. Well done to them.
