Sixth Apple Press day : report

This year the tempo was upped. For the first time ever we ran out of apples half way through the afternoon and had to gather up people for a scrumping run! Perhaps it was industrial press (thanks John Harrison) or the production line quality scratter (thanks Richard Holton) that enabled us to produce probably the most juice ever (a very rough estimate was about 200litres). Luckily Richard had cider from last year’s Apple Press Day to keep the workers going.

We were lucky with the weather too. From a dismal forecast on the Monday the weather became glorious. We timed it perfectly with the ripeness of the apple crop too! For once we might actually have hit the peak of Horningsea’s apple trees.

Many thanks to everybody who came and joined in. Many people took away a lot of juice. If you are going to ferment it then it would be great if you could bring a sample to one of the village events. Perhaps even 2016’s Apple Press day!

HRA Apple Pressing Day

The sixth annual Apple Pressing day will take place on Saturday the 19th of September at 13:00.HRA logo

Bring your own apples from the garden, some empty bottles (and just a bit of elbow grease!) and take your self- pressed apple juice home with you. As with last year’s event villagers apples will be placed in a communal pile for pressing. You can press just your own fruit but the previous three events have been very popular and you might have to wait.

On the morning of the Village Apple Pressing day we’ll trawl public apple trees in the village to start the “communal apple bucket”. If you fancy doing some scrumping, whether for the community pile or for yourself, then meet on the village green at 10:00. We’ll finish at 12:00 with the main event starting at 13:00.

Email hra.events@gmail.com or ring Chris on 07739 578 612 for details.

HRA Village Day

HRA has once again risen to the occasion by organising yet another very successful Village Day.

John Wilson with the committee arranged a very varied programme with something for everyone’s enjoyment. A musical organ played all afternoon and a long colourful bunting on the village hall fave an air of festivity setting the scene for the day.

Mary and James, the new tenants of the Plough and Fleece, provided a popular and successful bar tent, and it was Mary who announced the Village Day open.

There was so much to see and do from a traction engine that chugged away all day, to interesting vintage cars, motorbikes and tractors. The very popular bounce castle gave the children hours of excitement. We also had a steam engine which gave much enjoyment to children and adults alike as they rode around the green.

Steam train

The bottle stall coconut shy and static bike racing were all equally popular and added to the enjoyment of the afternoon in their different ways.

The, now traditional, tractor race as well

We had a dog show, which was judged by Jan Tomlinson.

The proud winner was Ralph, a proud Doberman. He had strong competition from the many dogs entered and Jan had her work cut out to eventually make a choice.

There were children’s races and a tug of War, which nearly had to be cancelled due to heavy rain. But the Horningsea spirit phone through and instead of drifting home villagers retreated to the village hall where Mary Briggs and Vee were serving homemade cakes and tea.

Richard Pleasants was a humorous and fun commentator throughout the afternoon and as the day turned into evening the scene began to change. Once again due to numerous individuals hard work the preparations begin for a BBQ, dancing in the hall and a magnificent beacon.

RichardThere are so many people who give so much of their time to make HRA events like this go with a swing. So a big collective thank you goes to them all for without their commitment events like this would just not take place and Horningsea would not be the village we all enjoy living in.

V.E Day Celebrations HRA – Report

HRA logoAs dawn broke over Horningsea on Saturday 9th there was an air of celebration. With each passing hour villagers could be seen either going to the Church with bags of memorabilia for their exhibitions or to the Village Hall to prepare for the V.E Day celebrations later in the day. There was much hustle and bustle in the hall and on the Green that day as the preparations started to take shape. Flags and Union Jacks appeared at the gate in and outside the Hall. Two vintage farm tractors and motorcycles were driven onto the Green and unexploded bombs could be seen protruding from the ground, which helped to add to the atmosphere.

CIMG3606

A ‘Digging for Victory’ garden was established at the Green earlier in the year. An original British Anzani Iron Horse was used by John Wilson and other members of the HRA to plough the ground and various groups within the village planted potatoes and other such vegetables.

CIMG3623

At 4 o’clock the celebrations began with W.V.S Canteen teas and refreshments kindly provided by villagers in typical 1940’s style, including sandwiches and buns with rationing in mind. Music of the era was excellently provided all afternoon and evening which complimented the Lindy Hoppers who joined in our celebrations with their wonderful dancing display. They happily included any of the villagers who wanted to dance too. It really helped to create such a happy atmosphere.

IMG 2175

Many of the villagers dressed in costume; we had evacuees returning home, the W.V.S providing teas, a Land Army Girl, an A.R.P warden, two Naval Officers and men and women dressed in the 40’s style. It was all wonderful. The celebrations ended with a barbeque, a magnificent beacon was lit and fireworks brought closure to the wonderful day.

Many people worked very hard to make it such a success, too many to name individually, so we would like to thank the HRA collectively for once again giving the village an event to remember. Last and by no means least, we would like to thank Cambridgeshire County Council for the V.E Day Celebration grant, which helped to make the event such a success.
