Farewell to Revd Diana, Sunday 9 May

Thank you and farewell to Rev Diana Johnson
Sunday 9 May, 10:30am at St Peters Church, Horningsea

St Peter’s Church says “Thank you and farewell” to Reverend Diana
Johnson who has been helping out since December. She is moving to a parish in
Northumberland and we wish her well. We have enjoyed her enthusiasm and
particularly her willingness to hold services outdoors – Mothering Sunday, Good Friday
and Easter Day at sunrise on the river bank. She has reminded us that we do not
always need to be inside our lovely church when we worship.

Her last Sunday in Horningsea will be 9th May at 10.30am – if you would like to bring a picnic we can sit in our own household bubbles suitably distanced in the churchyard to say farewell after the service.

We hope that the Diocese will find us another priest to help out while the process of
appointing a full time replacement priest for the three parishes progresses.

As lockdown restrictions lift the churches will be opening up, so we look forward to
welcoming everyone back to “live” services in May and June.

Horningsea Herald May 2021

Here’s May’s Horningsea Herald.

The first event in this month’s Herald is the literary Zoom event this afternoon to announce the winners of this year’s Horningsea Short Story Competition. The Zoom link to join is within the Herald.

Last month the Crown and Punchbowl reopened and on Tuesday the 18th the Plough and Fleece will reopen. How great to have both village pubs open again! Make sure you use them, the village would be poorer without these two fine establishments and after the past year they really want to see you!

Finally you will undoubtedly have seen the surveying work and the large compound built on Low Fen Drove at Honey Hill. Save Honey Hill group are fundraising, the first aim is to fund the initial legal advice that is essential for the campaign. Many people and businesses across the area have donated. There’s still a long, long way to go though. The fundraising leaflet is here. There’s also a A poster. Please put this on your wheelie bin or window.

The group are also currently looking for viewpoints in the village and on paths where you would see the 26 metre digestor towers. If you can see the pylons at Honey HIll from your house or garden, then you will see the sewage works. Please email any photos with location data preserved to info@savehoneyhill.org.

Winners of the Horningsea Short Story Competition

The winners will be announced at a Literary afternoon on Zoom on

Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May at 4pm – 5.30pm.

The Judges are: Cressida Downing, Alison Bruce, Janet Bingham, Ben Quash and Angela Brown (winner last time). Fran Johnstone is chairing the Judges who have already had a preliminary meeting to see if they can narrow down the entries to a short list.

On 3rd May there will be a talk and writing activity for children led by Janet Bingham – make sure you have paper and pencil or crayons so you can join in. Cressida and Alison will then talk about writing skills and their own writing techniques.

The winners will be asked to read their entries.

We hope that later in the year we can have a “live” event with our judges and other authors – but we have to wait for the Covid rules to change.

The link to Zoom will be in the Horningsea Herald and the village Facebook page.

If you cannot access the link, email franjohnstone (at) me.com

Thanksgiving service for the Duke of Edinburgh – Friday 16 April at 6pm

At St Peter’s Church, Horningsea

Friday 16 April at 6pm: a service of Thanksgiving for the life and legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh

We particularly want to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. Did you or a member of your family take part in the D of E? Did you get your bronze, silver or even gold award? Did you have any adventures or disasters on your expeditions? If so, please come along wearing your badge (if you can find it) and perhaps you can tell us your D of E story?

Did you meet Prince Philip on one of his many visits to Cambridge? Again, we will ask you to share any memories during the service.

If you can come, please call Jennie on 864 513 by 6pm on Thursday 15 April so we can work out a Covid-compliant seating plan.

Stay safe – don’t forget to wear a face mask.

Horningsea Herald April 2021

Here’s April’s Horningsea Herald.

The church has two riverside services this Easter. One perhaps a little early for many of this village.

The nice weather of the past few days may have gone, but things are looking up for a better spring and summer. The pubs are opening again and we have a new water taxi.

Mask up, keep your distance and get those jabs when offered. Let’s look forward to a social(ish) year (perhaps…!).
