VE Day Celebration – St Peter’s Church

70th Anniversary of VE Day St Peters Church Horningsea

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May there will be an exhibition of “Children of the War”.

If you were a child during the War and remember rationing, eating your first banana, gas masks, evacuees, air raids, the real Dads Army…. If you have any photographs, school reports, memorabilia, toys or books… If you can write a short note of your recollections…. Please let Lindsay know, drop your contribution into the Church on Saturday 2nd May.. Please make sure you put a label on any item, or take a copy of any precious photograph… so we can make sure you get your items back after the exhibition.

Sunday 10 May at 11am: Special Commemorative Service,when one of the special ceramic poppies from the Tower of London will on display.

Sunday 10 May 2 – 4.30 pm: Horningsea village school reunion

Sunday 10 May 2.30 – 4.30 pm: Bell ringing taster session –
come and see if you’d like to join the bell ringing team as a learner!

VE Day Celebration

Please celebrate the anniversary of VE day with the HRA:HRA logo

May 9th 2015
16:00 to 23:45

Come eat drink and be merry with the rest of the village to celebrate this anniversary. The evening will be jam packed with lots of memorabilia

  • Adult “wartime” fancy dress with prize
  • “Building a Gas mask” competition for the children
  • “Best Evacuee” fancy dress competition for the children
  • Vintage farm machinery
  • Vee’s WVS Teas
  • The VE “Dig for Victory” garden.
  • BBQ
  • 40’s music disco
  • Lindy Hop dancing
  • The village beacon will be lit
  • The BBQ will be ready for cooking at 17:00. Please bring a plate of “wartime food”!

    If you want some ideas for “wartime” food here’s a some suitable recipes.

    VE Day “Dig for Victory” garden update

    The HRA are planning, and preparing, the“dig for victory” garden in time for the VE celebrations this year. So far the garden has been ploughed with appropriately aged machinery, the garden has been rotavated and many village groups have planted various vegetables and fruit bushes… with a few wild flowers too!

    Lindsay’s Road to Mandalay – Saturday 25 April at 7:30pm

    In St Peter’s Church, Horningsea

    The Road to Mandalay…. Where mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun…. a journey into Myanmar – an illustrated lecture by Lindsay Davies.

    Travelling down the Salween and Irrawaddy Rivers…. visiting Colonial parts of the towns… wandering around villages near the Thai borders (but not where the land mines have not yet been cleared…. )
    looking at the markets and museums ….some of the differently dressed tribal people,monks and nuns…. discussing the future challenges with journalists, ambassadors, British Council, professors at the University… Enjoying sunsets from roof tops of Pagodas, visiting nurseries and schools, Baptist Churches and Catholic Cathedrals… Golden rocks, golden domes, golden stupas … caves with Buddhas and caves with hundreds of thousands of bats….
    Placing a cross on the memorial stone for Thomas Bailey saying “Remembered in Horningsea”
    …. and more!

    HRA Easter Egg Hunt

    10:30, Good Friday, Jubilee Gardens

    All village children are welcome to the Jubilee Gardens to enjoy a Easter Egg Hunt. Adults are also welcome for coffee and hot cross buns.

    We do need some mums/dads to help organise the hunt. So if you can help please arrive earlier on the day.

    It’s the AGM for the Horticultural show this month, on Wednesday March 18th at 19:30 in the Village Hall. They are on the lookout for new committee members too.

    It’s also the Rev. Michael Bowers last service on Mothering Sunday.
