Horningsea Herald February 2019

Here’s February’s Herald.

Throughout the next few months people, both old and young are invited to write short story about “borders” for Horningsea’s very own short story competition. You can read about it on the village website, and download the poster and entry form.

This month’s Herald also includes 2019’s calendar of events for both the HRA and the Church.

Do remember that there’s a public calendar of Horningsea events.

You can also add it to your own calendar directly.

Horningsea Short Story Competition

Fran Johnstone (co-ordinator of the judges)

You are invited to enter the inaugural Horningsea Short Story Competition, so grab those pens or laptops and get writing! The competition winners will be announced and the prizes awarded at a book fair in the church on Saturday, June 8th. There are separate classes for young people and adults. See the competition rules and poster sent with the Herald for full details. All entries will be judged anonymously and the judges will be a team including several published authors (several of them judges or ex-judges in real life, thanks to Lindsay Davies’ connections!).

The competition is open to everyone, but we are hoping that at least some of the prizes are carried off by Horningsea talent.
The deadline is April 30th.

Looking forward to being impressed.

Traffic speeds in Horningsea

The Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) has been up in the village since March 2018. The Parish Council has conducted some analysis on data collected between 20/5/18 and 10/11/18 and can report the following findings:

  • Data and anecdotal evidence shows that the VAS slows vehicles down and improves adherence to the 30 mph speed limit, particularly during the daytime (07:00 – 19:00)
  • Vehicles travelling late at night or in the early hours are less likely to drive within the speed limit
  • Around 80% of vehicles travel at 30mph or less when the VAS is present
  • This reduces to 60% when it is outside Kings Cottages (north entrance to the village)
  • However, this means that 20-40% of vehicles are still speeding even with the VAS and even more when the VAS is not present.
  • Maximum speeds recorded between 20/5/18 and 10/11/18 were 75 mph, at both the north and south ends of the village (01:15 and 05:30)
  • Weekday average traffic volumes are 2,500 at the north end and 3,500 at the south end (presumably greater due to visitors to Scotsdales and the pubs being more likely to enter and leave via the south end).
  • Peak traffic volumes are 08:00-09:00 at the north end of the village and 17:00-18:00 at the south end
  • Approximately 300 vehicles on an average week day during these times
  • .
The Parish Council will continue to monitor the VAS data and consider ways that could further reduce speeding through Horningsea.
