Come along and learn about the HRA. We aim to provide social events for residents throughout the year. Our regular events include International Evening (where residents bring dishes to share), Village Day (with live entertainment, a bouncy castle and more), Fish and Chip bingo, Apple Press day, a Seniors dinner and our big event being the Bonfire and Firework display in November. We also decorate the village for Christmas.
Would you like to get involved? We would love to have some new members and the AGM is a great time to come forward.
See you there!
Hello Horningsea, Happy Christmas!
Here’s the December Horningsea Herald.
The traditional events that kick off a Horningsea Christmas are close.
The Christmas Tree lighting in the Jubilee Gardens is on Sunday the 3rd and the Candlelit Carol Service in St Peter’s Church on Sunday the 10th.St Peter’s Church services during December
Advent Windows
For the last few years the village has joined in decorating the windows in their houses for Advent. From the 1st December you can walk around the village and spot the window for each day. Please do not post photos of that day’s window before the end of the day on Facebook. However, you are encouraged to post them afterwards!
Christmas at the The Plough and Fleece
On the last Friday before the big day (22nd Dec!) in the evening there will be prizes for the best/funniest/most original Christmas Jumpers in the evening
Our community pub will be open for drinks from 12 till two on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Horningsea Young Persons Orchestra at the Candlelit Carol service
The Horningsea Young Person’s Orchestra will be performing a piece at the Carol service on the 10th of December at 18:00. They will be performing a special Horningsea arrangement of Leopold Mozart’s Musical Sleigh Ride from his Divertimento in F Major. As this includes some percussion (such as bells and theoretically even a whip!) it can be played by people with very little or no musical experience, so everyone who’d like to be involved can be included.
Rehearsals will be on the 2/3rd of December and also during the day before the Carol Service on the 10th.
As it “says on the tin” the Nativity Story will be read for the youngest of our children – we need one Mary, one Joseph, one grumpy innkeeper, as many angels, Wise People and Shepherds as turn up. No one has any lines to learn …Please come suitably dressed to take part. Bring your parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours. The Nativity service will last about 15 minutes, with photo opportunities at the end for those who are happy to be photographed.
The Service on Christmas Day will be at 10.30 – Holy Communion with Carols. It is always lovely to welcome families and visiting relatives to join our regular congergation on this special day.
Sunday 10th December, 18:00, St Peter’s Church
If you have not been before, this is a very special evening in the Church – the oil lamps are lit, hundreds of candles fill the church, the electric lights are switched off and the church is full! Arrive early to get a seat and wear warm clothes … The Horningsea Young People’s Orchestra will play a specially adapted piece, there will be singing by young people and by the Fen Edge Singers as well as lots of opportunity to sing well known, favourite carols, interspersed with readings telling the story of the Nativity.
Contributions of mince pies will be welcome for refreshments after the service.

As the nights get longer, Horningsea becomes busier in November.
This Sunday (for once on the 5th!) sees the very popular Horningsea Fireworks and Bonfire.
Then there’s A Time To Remember on Saturday 4th November, and Remembrance Sunday service and wreath laying on the 12th November. You do not have to attend church but can just come to the War Memorial in the Jubilee Gardens at 10:45 for the two minute silence, the Last Post and the laying of the wreaths.
You can read about The Fallen of Horningsea (this is a work in progress and much more information is still to be added).

Horningsea Parish Council – New councillors needed!
Also Horningsea Parish Council really needs some new councillors. Horningsea is a small village and the Parish Council does a lot for us. Give them some help and do something for your community.

As the beginning of November includes All Saints Day and All Souls Day, this year there will be a short service at St Peter’s Church on Saturday 4th November at 15.00 when we will remember all those from the village who have died in the last year. Families are also invited to come along and ask us to remember their loved ones whenever and wherever they died. It would be good for families to make sure the family grave is tidy for that day. If you don’t have a family grave, why not “adopt” a grave that looks as if it would benefit from some love and attention. At the end of the service candles will be distributed. These can be placed on the family’s grave or in front of the Memorial Stone. We hope that the names of those who have died recently will have been inscribed on the stone in time for the service.
The Village Service of Remembrance for those killed in Wars will be on Sunday 12 November. There will be a short service in the church at 10.15. At 10.45 we will gather at the War Memorial in the Jubilee Gardens for the Act of Remembrance, the two minute Silence, the Last Post, the laying of Poppy Wreaths on behalf of various village organisations. Everyone is invited back to the church for a hot drink to warm up after the service.
Remember, remember the 5th of November because that’s the night when Horningsea’s firework display will take place.
Gate opens at 5.30 with the fireworks starting at 6.30pm. The bonfire will be lit in true spectacular Horningsea style straight after the fireworks.
