St Peter’s Church is one of the most important Churches in the Diocese of Ely. In the early 800′s there was an Minster Church in Horningsea with a community of priests. In 970 it became a “possession” of the Diocese of Ely. Some coffin lids from this period may still be seen in the church. In about 1210 it passed to St John’s Hospital which became St John’s College. The College is still the Patron of the Church.Much of the Church that stands today dates from the 14th and 15th Centuries. The font has been used to baptise babies in Horningsea for over 700 years and the pulpit is from about 1600. Major refurbishment took place in the 1860′s when Thomas Jekyll designed the gates, some pews and north aisle. In the twentieth century the church fell into disrepair but the village rallied round and in the 1970′s and 80′s the church yard was cleared and a programme of restoration has continued slowly since then. We are a small but active congregation.During the year we hold concerts with poetry readings, school reunions and many other non religious events. Why dont you pop in to see one Sunday morning, you would be made very welcome.
Services on the first and third Sundays are a Communion Service at 9:00 am and on the second and fourth Sundays are Morning Worship at 11:00 am. When there is a fifth Sunday we have a joint service with Fen Ditton and Teversham Churches which rotates between the three Churches.
If you want to arrange a baptism, wedding or funeral please ring Reverend Michael Bowers on 01223 295927. The Church Wardens are Vee Saunders (441900) and Jennie Pratt (864513).
